Ross County 4 Albion Rovers 0 Michael Gardyne scored a hat-trick to send Albion Rovers spinning out of the William Hill Scottish Cup. The former Celtic kid was on top form at Victoria Park on Saturday with Paul Lawson also on target in this third-round clash. Rovers couldn’t have been handed a harder challenge as their run in the competition was ended almost as soon as it had started. But Paul Martin’s men will seek solace in the fact that County are a team destined for top-flight football next season. The home side opened the scoring in the ninth minute when a cross from Iain Vigurs was bundled past keeper Derek Gaston by Gardyne. It was 2-0 midway through the first half with County, who notched up their eighth successive win, netting through Paul Lawson’s 25-yard drive. Rovers had their chances. A shot from Ryan McStay was saved by Staggies goalie Michael Fraser before John Gemmell smacked an effort off the bar. However, the hosts finished strongly and added a third goal in the 70th minute when Gardyne guided home Gary Miller’s ball. And the scoring was capped in the first minute of injury-time with Gardyne claiming the match ball after substitute Kurtis Byrne’s shot was blocked. There will be further disappointment for Rovers who will be fined around £1,000 of their cup prize money after five players were booked.
