| Match Report | Report from the Inverness Courier. Caledonian FC 3 Ross County 1 Caledonian were quite worthy of their win over Ross County at Telford Street on Saturday. Parts of the pitch were water-logged, and weather conditions were all against good football, but although this was so, both teams contrived to make the game fairly interesting by swift attacking and by swinging the ball from end to end. Caledonian established a two-goal lead at half-time. The first point came after seven minutes’ play, and was scored by Gray, while Morrison got the second goal just on half-time from a pass from Whitton. The visitors did most of the attacking in the first half, but thanks mainly to Ross and Mitchell, the Caledonian backs, and weakness at the goalmouth, they failed to open their account. Caledonian made good use of their wing men, and Whitton and Davidson often brought danger to the Dingwall defence by their accurate crosses. Gray was, however, the best of the home attack, and Scott was frequently in action. The Inverness wing halfbacks, Ballantyne and Mackay, were rather better in attack than in defence, and they helped in no small way to force on the home forwards. Mitchell was the better of the Caledonian backs and his kicking and tackling were both effective in spite of the difficult conditions. The two Ross County backs, Munro and Stewart, were often found wanting, but Scott, the goalkeeper, did well, and had a number of clever saves to his credit. Ramage was the outstanding man in the Ross-shire half-back line, and, thanks to his attention, Morrison got very little scope in the home attack. Traill, too, put in a great deal of useful work for his team, but the Ross County forward play was seldom impressive. The honours in the second half were evenly divided. Morrison missed a fine opportunity of scoring for Caledonian shortly after the resumption, but later Whitton put the issue beyond all doubt when he headed in a cross shot from Grant. The visitors came away strongly in the closing stages of the game, and Ramage scored their only goal from a free kick. Encouraged by this success, the Dingwall team sustained the pressure, but Ross and Mitchell had little difficulty in repulsing the attacks. |
