Fort William 3 Ross County 2 At Fort William one would have shaded the local team that slightly ahead on fitness, although County gained the points for pure football and the ability to swing the ball about to telling effect throughout the game. Unfortunately they missed out when it came to "finishing", although Gordon Connelly's goal was well constructed and perfectly struck affair. The groundwork had been laid by Chris Somerville, and completed by Cammie Robertson, whose cross to the far post was hit fiercely home by a delighted Connelly. A pity about the penalty which he missed in the first half. The keeper brought off a brilliant save as Connelly tried to place the ball into the strong rain-laden wind to the keeper's left. The Fort keeper was to save his side on innumerable occasions after that as County raised their game, taking their opponents apart quite effortlessly--it seemed--at times. The keeper made brilliant diving saves, and at other times finger-tipped the ball away from strikes by Barry Wilson or James Mackay. Barry was quite tireless in his efforts, switching as quickly from one wing to the other in an endeavour to ring the changes, ready to shoot in an instance, on occasions despite the fact a colleague was better placed. One of the best struck goals of the day came from Ross County's captain Scott Lemmon, who headed a corner kick from the right into the net at a time when County were beginning to completely reassert themselves. It was a most spectacular effort, and put Scott into the leading goal scorer spot with a total if two out of the three scored! Good going for a full-back, but not much comfort for the strike-force, who lost the services of Nero Macdonald in the first half, when sustained an ankle injury. Ross County were setback on their heels within five minutes of the start before they has time to settle into playing into the strong, rain-laden wind. A quick shot from MURDOCH, who had cut in from the right, should have presented no difficulty to an experienced keeper such as Derek Rudkin, but in an endeavour to punch the chest-high ball round the post, he simply aided it into the net. This was the confidence booster the Lochaber men required, and they made the most of it playing with some flair and no little luck. Ross County maintained steady pressure on the Fort goal, but their every move was being thwarted by some stout defending, and the agility of a young keeper, who was alert to every shot coming his way. In one of the County attacks, Macdonald injured an ankle when falling awkwardly, and was replaced by young Garry Mackay. Connelly's penalty was saved, and this further affected County's morale, although defensively they had tightened up considerably, and at half time were just the goal down and no doubt looking forward to a second half, when they would have the benefit of the elements, as an aid to tiring muscles. Ten minutes into the second half, County equalised with a great goal manufactured by Somerville and Robertson, and rounded off by CONNELLY. Rudkin committed a second fatal error, when he went haring off his line to the edge of the penalty area in an endeavour to beat Masson to a through ball. He missed his tackle and as he struggled back to the goal line, Masson simply flighted the ball to the far post and SHEARER headed it home in the 76th minute. MASSON seemed to have wrapped the game up in the 81st minute, when his fierce shot through a ruck of players crashed low into the net. In the closing minutes of the regulation 90, and for the three of injury time, County kept an unrelenting pressure on the Fort goal, but all the home defence gave away was one goal--Scott LEMMON's well directed header into the net in the 83rd minute.
