Caledonian FC 1 Ross County 1 Caley came perilously close to throwing the skids under TSB Highland League leaders Ross County at Telford Street last night when the top two battled out a titanic 1-1 draw. The home side came out determined to take the play to Ross County and ended up getting the better of the game for the first hour. At half-time Caley had only an Ian Polworth penalty to show for their virtual domination and in the opening phase of the second half most of the chances went their way until Alan Duff grabbed his 26th goal of the season and set up a torrid last 15 minutes which could have seen either side grab victory. Caley sweeper Kevin Mann, who marshalled the Caley defence superbly throughout, collected a yellow card in the tense opening minutes for a check on County striker Brian Grant. County keeper Ure produced a fine save in 15 minutes to parry a half-volley from Polworth. Three minutes later Duff volleyed a Cammy Robertson cross barely a yard wide from the edge of the Caley area. Five minutes before the break the league leaders found themselves a goal behind. Alan Hercher made a tremendous run on the blind side to gather a cross ball from the hard-working Lisle and was decked by Williamson, who subsequently was shown a yellow card. POLWORTH made no mistake with the resulting penalty. Within a minute Caley could have been two goals up when Polworth climbed at the near post to meet a Christie corner with a crashed down off the underside of the bar and was cleared by the alert Bellshaw. Twice in the space of a minute just after the break Caley came close to extending their slender lead. Christie slipped a free kick--awarded when Ure took too many steps with the ball--to Andrew and the Caley sweeper's shot almost spiralled into the net off a County defender. The home side continued to press for a second goal with Polworth dragging a left foot shot just wide after running on to an Urquhart through ball in 67 minutes. County keeper Ure found himself in the thick of the action again in 75 minutes when he pulled off a superb save to get his hands to a deflected Lisle volley which was heading into a top corner. County drew level in 76 minutes through DUFF and he could have put County ahead when he met a Connelly chip at the near post only to see his header come back off the bar with Grant attempting to chip a follow-up shot over McRitchie's head. Caley almost scored when Lisle got in a powerful header which Ure blocked on his line.
