Ross County 2 Queen of the South 2 Ross County's marathon Scottish Cup tie against Queen of the South ill drag into a fourth week after last night's long-awaited clash left the tie deadlocked at 2-2. County now face a long haul to Palmerston Park on Monday night to face the Doonhammers again after having victory snatched from them late on in a pulsating tie in front of a bumper 5,000 crowd at Victoria Park last night. The Highland League leaders led the tie twice, going in front through Alan Duff just before the half-hour, but were almost immediately pegged back by an equaliser from Billy Sim. Chris Somerville--the smallest man on the park--sent the big crowd into raptures in 52nd minute when he headed County in front for the second time. But, with just eight minutes to go. Andy Thomson swivelled in the County box to drive home and make sure the long-running tie will go to another episode. Queens produced equalisers at crucial times as match-starved County struggled to produce the form which saw off Alloa in the first round. Towards the end of the match there were just too many tired legs and exhausted minds in the royal blue shirts, leaving Queens to finish the stronger despite having only 10 men on the field after losing Sim to a head injury with both substitutes used in the final minutes. County can look to a shocking refereeing decision which robbed them of a penalty three minutes into the second half with the score tied at 1-1 Kenny Campbell clearly handled a Ferries cross in the penalty box. And a little later Brian Grant was put clean through by Connelly from well inside his own half only to be ruled off-side. Those two incidents were typical of the way things went for County in front of the biggest Dingwall crowd since 1966 and the visit of Rangers. County started brightly, though they lacked the movement up front which has characterised their performances this season so far and the opening goal in the 28th minute was a typical piece of opportunism. A Mike Ure punt landed on the edge of Queens penalty area and was missed by a mile by Kevin Hetherington. Alan DUFF pounced to drive the ball sweetly under Alan Davidson's body. But within four minutes County gifted the Doonhammers the equaliser when SIM was left totally unmarked to crash a half-volley past Ure after Andy Thomson fired in a low cross from the right flank. Ten minutes later, with the County defence looking static. Sim again ghosted in on the blind side and came close to scoring a carbon-copy second goal. but his shot drifted wide. With former Celt Roddy MacDonald left in the dressing-room with a strained back at the start of the second half. County pushed forward and had to wait only seven minutes to go ahead. Billy Ferries, who had a quiet first half by his own volatile standards, crossed from the right and found SOMERVILLE unmarked on the six-yard line. His glancing header gave Davidson no chance. As the game went into the closing 10 minutes, County's tiring defence couldn't clear their lines and Andy THOMSON beat Ure with a 12-yard grounder. The game drew to an untidy close with two Queens players--boss McGarvey and Hetherington--having their names taken for time-wasting as Queens hung on to force the replay.
