Nairn County 1 Ross County 4 Ross County cruised to the top of the TSB Highland League on goal difference at Station Park last night with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over 10-man Nairn County. With Gordon Connelly orchestrating every move, the men from Dingwall made sure that Nairn were never allowed to recover from losing Brian Davidson--sent off in 25 minutes after conceding a penalty which allowed County to establish a 2-0 lead. County came out of the blocks quickly, putting Nairn under pressure. Somerville joined the first County attack to provide Connelly with a shooting opportunity, but County's top scorer blazed wide from 15yd. The visitors went ahead in 12 minutes when Cammy Robertson hit a measured cross from the left for Scott LEMMON to head in at the far post. With Nairn struggling to exert any real pressure, County quickly got on top in the midfield where Somerville and Williamson combined to get Ferries in on the right, but the County winger saw Nairn keeper Neilson pull off a fine save at his near post. County extended their lead two minutes later when they were awarded a penalty after Brian Davidson felled Duff as the County striker burst into the area. Referee McDonald immediately pointed to the spot before showing Davidson a red card and CONNELLY rammed home the spot kick to give County a two goal lead. They nearly capitalised on Nairn's personnel shortage on the half-hour mark, but Somerville was unlucky to see his rising drive from 14yd cannon back off the upright, with most spectators convinced that the ball had crossed the line. Nairn re-organised quickly. For the rest of the first half they had little to offer as an attacking force, but defended well and allowed County little leeway coming forward. But the home side found themselves on the rack again straight from the re-start when a Robbie Williamson header had to be kicked off the goal-line. County's third goal came in 51 minutes when a Connelly slip opened the Nairn defence to leave Alan DUFF with a simple 10yd finish. For a 15 minutes spell early in the second half, Nairn's play belied the fact that they were a man short. They took advantage when the County midfield allowed the pace to drop, but they found County's defence organised and solid. Robbie WILLIAMSON added County's fourth in 69 minutes, running on to a through ball from Connelly to round Neilson and stroke the ball home from 10yd. The home side pulled a goal back six minutes later when Ronnie SHARPE took on the County defence to tuck the ball past Ure. Twice in the space of a minute in the dying stages County could have had a fifth goal, but Duff and Connelly both fired wide in one-on-one situations with Nairn keeper Neilson.
