Forres Mechanics 2 Ross County 4 Ross County smashed Forres Mechanics' 100% TSB Highland League record at Mosset Park on Saturday. Two goals from Gordon CONNELLY and Chris SOMERVILLE in the opening nine minutes set up a 4-2 win where the final score line ultimately flattered a Forres side who lacked attacking ideas and were made to look pedestrian in defence by County's short, sharp passing game and movement off the ball. Can-Cans manager Harry McFadden must be concerned by the ease with which County, prompted by the probing of Connelly, the incessant running of Chris Somerville and the speed and guile of a half-fit Billy Ferries, prised apart the normally miserly Forres defence. "Losing two goals in the first 10 minutes is an absolutely shocking start to the match," he said. "That meant we had to chase the game all the way." When FERRIES, who passed a late fitness test on a groin strain, added the third goal just before the interval there was no way back for the Can-Cans, but County manager Bobby Wilson admitted after the match that he was unhappy with his team's second-half performance. "With a 3-0 half time lead I have to say I'm a bit disappointed at the way we almost let them back into the game," he said. "But I was pleased with many aspects of the way we played in the first half." A mistake by keeper Mike Ure, who was slow to a pass-back from Albert Allan, let in Brian MINTY six minutes after the interval to make the score 3-1 and five minutes late Alan DUFF stretched the County lead back to three goals. Ronnie Dunbar was allowed in on the right by two County defenders to get a second for the Can-Cans. Whether Ross County can sustain a season-long challenge will depend on how their brand of football survives the winter months. But on Saturday's form they will be a threat to anybody.
