Ross County 3 Keith 1 A classy, confident and at times even cocky display by Ross County left a previously five-star Keith combine gasping for breath and hanging grimly on the ropes at Dingwall last Saturday as County literally waltzed to their second successive championship with a 3-1 win while close contenders Caley were going down 3-1 to Fraserburgh at nearby Inverness. The calibre of County's display was such that the danger of Keith spoiling the Ross team's hopes of that second TSB title in a row never really materialised, even when they found themselves trailing to a goal out of the blue in the 27th minute. For almost the entire 90 minutes County were in complete command of the situation. Here was a team devoid of the nerves they were supposed to suffer from during such an important fixture. A team clearly relishing the challenge and playing the copy book football which took them to the finishing post with flair, football which is indeed a credit to manager Bobby Wilson who proved himself once again a shrewd tactician even without key players who, at the start of the season so many months ago, had been such a vital part of his plans to keep the title. He marshalled the troops he had at his disposal with such expertise, gleaned from years of coaching, and with such conviction that County played with a panache which had that air of authority and 'who dares wins' attitude. Now, with all his stars signed up once again for next season, and with flying winger Billy Ferries no doubt chomping at the bit to get down that right wing again, Bobby Wilson will be attempting to equal his feat at Kynoch Park, Keith, some years back of three titles in a row. And such an achievement is certainly not beyond him and his charges. While big Scott Lemmon was sorely missed at the back all credit to the towering Johnston Bellshaw, the tireless Chris Somerville, the flamboyance of Robbie Williamson and the masterly of Gordon Connelly as County went about the task of keeping the championship. Sandy Macleod slotted into the side confidently when Gary Campbell was injured and with Cammy Robertson and newcomer Steve Hutcheson leading by example County were well on their way. Up front Brian (JO) Grant, now on 45 goals, and his partner in the scoring stakes, Alan Duff, put the fear of death up every defence they faced while Andy Macleod was getting better with each game and Barry Wilson provided an awful lot of the ammunition for his sharp-shooting colleague. The young winger is an exciting sight when he gets the ball ahead of him and with the prospect of the return of Billy Ferries, by far the most talented right winger in the league, County must surely have it all going for them once again come next term. And while we applaud the County achievement for the second time in as many seasons we must not lose sight of the other players who made it all possible. Players like goalkeeper Mike Ure, defenders Gary Ross, Albert and Robert Allan and young Kevin Craig who all contributed to the final fling which takes place against Peterhead this Saturday at Dingwall. As I say, Keith came to Dingwall with a string of good results hanging to their bow, but if they thought they were going to add County's scalp to their impressive array of conquests they had a rude awakening in store. Mind you, they were always dangerous when given the chance and when YEATS thundered a shock opener past Hutcheson after 27 minutes home fans were stunned. Not the players though. They continued to go about their task in a workmanlike manner, building up attacks with patience and getting their reward some nine minutes after the Keith goal. And it was 'top gun' JO GRANT again who did the trick. earlier the striker had found himself with an easy chance but appeared some what shocked to be on his own, hesitated and Thain stepped in to avert the danger. But the bustling Brian made no mistake this time from a perfect Wilson cross and right on the interval the former Forfar man struck again. Again Wilson was the maker and Grant the taker, this time the winger's cross being headed into GRANT's head by Duff and that was that. Big Bellshaw was not his usual, commanding self in spells of Keith pressure and Keith's Willie Sutherland was giving the Ross rear guard some troublesome times with Hutcheson being forced to save with his knees from the former Inverness Thistle player. A speculative shot from Thow almost caught the Ross Keeper out but County should have gone further ahead after 57 minutes when an array of shots flew around the visiting goal without results. Andy Macleod was hurt and limped off to be replaced by Jamie MacPherson (County's latest signing for next season) and he began to create all kinds of trouble for the maroons defence. In one mazy run the former Brora player swept through the Keith defence but unselfishly opted to pass to Duff on the left and the chance was gone. But right on the whistle MACPHERSON did everything right this time in an identical move from the first. Again he got the ball around mid-field and cut through the defence, leaving maroon jerseys sprawling in his wake, and this time decided to do it all and lashed the ball past a bemused Thain with the force of Chris Eubank uppercut to put the icing on the cake right at the finish. It was another terrific performance from County and now they tackle Peterhead this Saturday at Dingwall as worthy league champions for the second time round. Let's hope they finish off with yet another victory against a team who manager Bobby Wilson has yet to see off with a victory at Dingwall since he arrived here five seasons ago.
