Ross County 3 Caledonian FC 1 The TSB Highland League's leading marksman Brian Grant could miss the last three games of Ross County's bid to retain their league crown. The 24-year-old scorer of 43 goals this season suffered a knee injury and missed the second half of Saturday's crucial 3-1 over leaders Caley. County manager Bobby Wilson believes Grant's injury could threaten his place in the County line-up against Fort William at Claggan Park tomorrow night. He said: "We took Brian off just after half time after giving him a couple of minutes to see if he could run the injury off. "I suspect it's a knee ligament injury and that could have him struggling for the last three matches. We'll have to wait and see how it shapes up in the next couple of days." Famed for flair rather than fight, the defending champions uncovered a gritty, stubborn facet to make-up on Saturday to throw the title race wide open again. Their battling 3-1 win over lacklustre Caley in difficult conditions pegged the Blues' lead to one point with three games each to play and delighted the County manager. He said: "The game was as much a change of character as a test of character from our point of view. We needed to apply ourselves in a totally different way and we delivered the goods. "The wind made sure the game would never be a free-flowing classic and brought the outcome down to a question of which side could apply itself better. "We were disciplined, we worked hard at the basics and that is what made sure we came out on top and were never really troubled by Caley." County skipper Cammy ROBERTSON, who, with long serving clubmate Scott Lemmon, embarks on a well-earned testimonial year shortly, opened the scoring in 17 minutes with a low, angled 20yd shot which deceived McRitchie in Caley goal. Caley replied with a penalty from Mike ANDREW on the half hour after Charlie Christie, who flitted in and out of the game, was upended by County left back Sandy McLeod. But by half time and with Caley struggling to match their work rate, County were 2-1 in front after Johnston BELLSHAW stroll in at the back post to punish slack defending at a corner with a powerful downward header. Nine minutes into the second half, Sandy MCLEOD powered a header into the roof of the net as Caley again committed suicide at a set-piece and the contest was effectively over. While the Caley keeper was busy in the second half, his opposite number Steve Hutcheson was given little to do by a Caley side which just could not string passes together. The defence conceded three bad goals and in midfield Martin Lisle came off second best in his battle with Gordon Connelly. Alan Hercher never looked like adding to his 25-goal tally and Charlie Christie looked diffident at best. Up front things were little better, with Wilson Robertson shackled superbly by Chris Somerville, Billy Urquhart stifled by Johnston Bellshaw and Danny MacDonald never getting into the game. And the introduction of super sub Ian Polworth and Brian Gallagher in the second half in place of Urquhart and Robertson in a complete chance of tack wrought no improvement in Caley's fortunes. "Too many of our players had an off-day together, but all the excuses in the world won't get back the three points we dropped," said Caley co-manager John Docherty. "County wanted to win more than we did and they made sure we were second to everything all over the park. They thoroughly deserved their victory."
