Ross County 1 Lossiemouth 0 Ross County are set to make keeper Steve Hutcheson, their star performer in Saturday's 1-0 McEwan's Lager North Cup final replay victory over Lossiemouth, a permanent fixture at Victoria Park. The 23-year-old made certain County will spend whatever is necessary to make his temporary move permanent by breaking Lossiemouth's heart with a string of brilliant saves in the second half of a real cliff hanger. Brought in on a temporary transfer from Premier Division Falkirk three months ago, his steady performances so far had already prompted County manager Bobby Wilson to open negotiations with Falkirk counterpart Jim Jefferies. The County manager said: "I had already spoken to Falkirk about getting the lad moved up here on a permanent basis and his performances against Lossie make me even keener to get him. "He has impressed everybody with his attitude, but Saturday's replay was the first time he has really been tested and he was absolutely magnificent. In dire contrast to the drab affair seven days earlier, the replay was an enthralling game plated at fever pitch in front of a 1,600 crowd. The winning goal--Brian GRANT's 41st goal of the season--came after just 15 minutes. A Wilson free kick was headed back across the goalmouth by Sandy MacLeod, who has emerged as another great Wilson discovery, and the County striker pounced to lash the ball home from close in. The pitch of the game just kept on rising from that point on. Manager Wilson said: "We're delighted to have won a third trophy this season and to win the North Cup for the first time in 20 years. However, all credit to Lossie because they made us work for it." Early in the second half, Grant, Alan Duff and Chris Somerville had half-chances to seal the game, but they could not convert them and that let the Coasters back in. Lacklustre and diffident seven days earlier, Lossie rolled up their sleeves and, but for the acrobatics of County's inspired keeper, could have been celebrating a victory of their own. He threw himself at a 30-yard rocket from Derek Hanratty and clawed away a Scott Paterson header in the first half and defied Lossie livewire Iain Stewart three times in the second half. Lossie manager Fraser Kellas, disappointed though he was in defeat, believes his side will benefit from the experience which he sees as another step towards the team's coming of age as challengers for major honours. He said: "I'm very proud of the way the players responded because we had a point to prove to ourselves and the fans after the 0-0 draw a week earlier. "We kept our discipline and mustered the fight to make a game of it and I believe that if we had managed to get an equaliser we could have gone on to win the cup." There was one sad postscript to a fine game in the shape of an injury to Lossie defender Gordon Winton, who came off second best in an aerial challenge with a totally blameless Sandy MacLeod in the second half. Winton, who will be out for the rest of the season with a broken jaw, was taken to Raigmore Hospital where X-rays confirmed manager Kellas's worts rears.
