Ross County 3 Gala Fairydean 0 Highland League champions Ross County cruised into the second round of the Tennents Scottish Cup with a 3-0 replay win against South of Scotland champions Gala Fairydean in Dingwall last night. After a 10-minute delay to allow the 1,700 crowd into Victoria Park, three goals in a 10-minute spell at the end of the first half--two from Gordon Connelly and the other from Barry Wilson--buried the Borderers. "It was an efficient rather than an inspiring performance and the players are actually a bit disappointed that they didn't reward a big crowd with something a little more exciting to watch," said County manager Bobby Wilson. "At the end of the day we're there in the next round and we managed to do tonight what we ought to have done on Saturday." Although far from a vintage County performance--they never quite looked as full of running, movement and urgency as they usually do--when they did get going they simply blew Gala away. With the second round berth booked, the Dingwall side settled for what they had and controlled a lacklustre second half without ever getting out of first gear. The outstanding contribution in the first half came from Sandy McLeod, who was drafted in to replace the suspended Johnston Bellshaw and found his feet quickly in a County defence who never broke sweat. The pace of Saturday's man of the match, Gala's Stuart Thorburn, caused County problems. On one occasion Thorburn rounded Robbie Williamson on the left only for teammate Fraser Lothian to head his cross straight at Ure in the County goal. County broke through in 35 minutes when Chris Somerville ran at the Gala defence and was stopped in his tracks. The ball broke off a Gala foot and CONNELLY reacted first to sweep the ball under Gala's stand-in keeper O'Brien for the long-awaited opener. Two minutes later, County were two up and the tie was dead, with Somerville again the architect. The little right back took a great ball from Wilson and was sent crashing down inside the Gala box. Referee Miller pointed to the penalty spot and CONNELLY sent the keeper the wrong way to atone for Saturday's last minute miss at Netherdale. County lost Somerville in 40 minutes when he had to be stretchered off with an ankle injury, Jamie McPherson coming into the home midfield with skipper Cammy Robertson moving to right back as County reorganised. Just before half-time, County hit goal No. 3 when they suckered the Gala defence with a free kick move. Connelly nudged a free kick to his right, Robertson drove the ball in low and WILSON ran the third goal home from point-blank range. The second half produced little to excite a large but unusually quite crowd, with Gala looking a beaten side and County happy to coast to the finish. Mike Ure had to produce his only real save of the game 14 minutes from time when Dean Wilson was given a free header to a Thorburn cross.
