Ross County 0 Lossiemouth 0 Highland League champions Ross County squandered three great chances as they were held to a goalless draw by battling Lossiemouth at Victoria Park, Dingwall, last night. The Coasters were well worth their point, although they never quite looked as though they would win an evenly contested match which both sides could have won in a frantic last five minutes. The visitors proved to be anything but pushovers for a Ross County side who looked somewhat disjointed and lacking their normal fluency. Lossie matched County's effort in midfield and up front, ably led by striker Iain Stewart, troubled the normally cast-iron County defence. County could so easily have been two goals ahead inside 10 minutes when the league's leading scorer, Brian Grant, shot wide after catching the Lossie defence square as he ran on to a Williamson lofted ball and Lossie keeper Ivor Pirie pulled off a tremendous save to turn a Connelly drive on to his crossbar. Lossie finished the first half by pinning the league champions back in their own half. Ross County let another chance go begging in 56 minutes when Bellshaw threaded a through ball to Somerville in the Lossie six-yard box, but Grant volleyed the little full back's cutback on to the bar at the near post when it would have been easier to score. A low 20-yard drive from Lossie defender Tommy Madden swerved just wide with Ure beaten and the same player stretched County with a raking through ball to livewire Stewart, whose progress was stopped by a brilliant tackle from Robert Allan. Lossie, who had both subs on, were reduced to 10 men when skipper Steve Kew had to leave the field for treatment after a clash of heads with Connelly midway through the second half. The only save of any account which Lossie keeper Pirie had to make in the second half was from teammate Dallas, who attempted a headed pass back from six yards. Even the appearance of Billy Ferries, who came off the bench to a warm welcome, could do nothing to pep-up off-colour County.
