Ross County 3 Elgin City 1 New Highland League champions Ross County came off the ropes to overcome "old champs" Elgin City through a piece of vintage Gordon Connelly magic. After unfurling their first title flag in 24 years. County found slick, eager Elgin a hot handful and trailed with 60 minutes of the game gone. But some classic Ross raiding and inventive play, orchestrated by Connelly and helped by Grant's close control and Wilson's pace, saw them run out emphatic winners to the delight of 1,270 fans, who went home optimistic of a successful title defence. Ex-Rangers Ian MacFadyen gained in confidence as the match wore on and made a promising contribution as sweeper for the Dingwall men. New Elgin boss Brian Black can take encouragement from a good display by his side until they were swamped in the second half. Neil Grant, 18-year-old son of the former City skipper, was an outstanding debutant. Elgin took the lead in 20 minutes when Taylor created the opening and, as Robertson hesitated, DE BARROS pounced to drive it high into the net. Watt gloriously touched away Lemon's header as the home side hit back, but Elgin were full value for their interval lead. County, however, stepped up a gear in the second half, creating a string of chances before equalising in 57 minutes with a goal to remember MacFadyen's low cross spun into the path of CONNELLY, who flicked it up in the air and swerved away from a defender to volley the ball in off the post. Within 90 seconds, County were in the lead when Wilson's cross was handled by MacLean and CONNELLY made an excellent job of the penalty kick. Three minutes more and another penalty, when McHardy pulled down Wilson in the box and was booked, but this time Watt brilliantly saved Connelly's spot kick. In 79 minutes just after Ure had made a point-blank save from Anderson. County grabbed another when Wilson's cross gave Connelly an open goal. However, the midfielder tried to walk it in and the ball was scrambled clear, only for GRANT to pounce and crash home his team's third. In the closing minutes Elgin's MacLean and Taylor were both booked for late tackles.
