Caledonian FC 2 Ross County 1 Ross County midfield general Gordon Connelly has his leg in plaster with torn ankle ligament and will miss the Dingwall club's remaining three games. Connelly was an early casualty as the champions went down 2-1 to Caley, who kept their championship challenge alive with a display of outstanding determination in a Telford Street thriller. "Caley were quite cynical early on," said Ross manager Bobby Wilson yesterday. "But it was a tremendous game and we certainly deserved some-thing out of it." Caley manager John Docherty was delighted at his team's fighting spirit. Hunger is what will decide the outcome of the title race--who want to win it the most," he said. "We have a tough finish but we certainly showed that hunger against County. Now we need to maintain that kind of character against Nairn in midweek and then the big one with our title rivals Elgin on Saturday." Caley, who lost striker Dave Caldwell early on, were boosted by a splendid performance from Colin Mitchell, who has spent the greater part of the season out of the first team. The former Reading player ran the midfield with his clever touches and deft control. Fought with the intensity of a cup-tie, this was a memorable affair and the visitors certainly had the lion's share of play. But their front line looked out of touch after they had fallen behind to Wilson ROBERTSON's well-taken early goal. When Barry WILSON equalised direct from a corner kick with 15 minutes to go, the ball going in off keeper Mark McRitchie's fingertips, County looked as if they could go on and sink Caley's title bid. But left back Mark McALLISTER powered his way into the box and his strike clinched the points for Caley. Kevin Mann's return has bolstered the Inverness side while young Paul Houston was an outstanding substitute for Caley. The visitors played without a sweeper in an attacking formation, but they could not break down a defiant home defence and Caley were always dangerous on the break. The real winners were the 1,100 fans who got tremendous value for money in a rousing encounter. Ross County manager Bobby Wilson described complaints about his son, winger Barry Wilson, lifting his jersey to expose a T-shirt emblazoned "Let's all laugh at Caley" as "making a mountain out of a molehill." He said after Saturday's 2-1 defeat against Caley: "He did not flourish the T-shirt at Caley fans or players but at our own supporters."
