Elgin City 0 Ross County 0 Ross County reserved keeper Ross Cathcart has been put on standby to help keep the defending champions' Press and Journal Highland League title challenge alive at Grant Park this weekend. The last time Cathcart (23) answered manager Bobby Wilson's alarm call he starred in the Dingwall club's 6-4 Scottish Cup second round demolition of Queen of the South at Palmerston Park two years ago. He could be thrown in at the deep end again against Lossiemouth if first-team keeper Steve Hutchison fails to win his fitness race this week after suffering a thigh strain in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Elgin City at Borough Briggs. Manager Wilson said: Steve faces a week of intensive treatment in a bid to be fit for Saturday and all we can do at this stage is keep our fingers crossed he makes it. "But if he doesn't I'll have no reservations at all about pitching Ross Cathcart in against Lossie. He has been in great form in our reserve side and has never let us down in the past." Keeper Hutchison's injury contributed to the one moment of controversy in a disappointing game played on a fiery surface. It is a moment which could eventually end up casting City the title. Hutchison, with his thigh heavily strapped after half-time, stayed rooted to the ground in 53 minutes when Sammy Leonce towered above him at the back post to nod home a cute chipped cross from Russell McKay. Referee Mike Pocock chalked the goal off believing that Hutchison, who was visibly struggling, had been held down by the City striker--an opinion not shared by City player-manager John Teasdale and most of the 1,200-strong crowed. "It looked a perfectly good goal to me and I believe most of the Ross County players were ready to accept that we had scored." he said. The City boss confirmed a heavy club fine for centre half Graeme Dallas, who rightly got his marching orders early in the second half for a high challenge on County winger Barry Wilson. After failing to spring City's well-oiled offside trap in the first half, County were handed their chance to win the game when Dallas was dismissed and manager Wilson's biggest regret was that they did not take it. He said: "With Elgin down to 10 men we had half-an-hour to take the game by the scruff of the neck and we couldn't do it." City will reflect on three early chances which were cleared off the County line in a whirlwind opening 15 minutes, but they will thank Craig Hinchcliffe for a stupendous save from Alan Duff on the half-hour which stopped County getting their noses in front. Duff and cohort Brian Grant both missed chances for County, while Russell McKay should have put City in front when he burst through early in the second half. A draw was probably the right result. City looked short of guile on Saturday and, while their physical strength and impressive fitness will give them a definite edge over Fraserburgh this weekend, they will need an element of craft and patience to beat the young Broch side. County, meanwhile, will need to recover their scoring touch soon if they want that third seccessive title.
