Ross County 1 Keith 2 Title treble-chasers Ross County will pull out all the stops to get winger Barry Wilson and defender Chris Somerville fit for Saturday's Press & Journal Highland League clash with Cove Rangers at Victoria Park. Touchline terror Wilson, who has all but shaken off a troublesome thigh strain, reported for extra training yesterday and the creative Somerville will undergo intensive treatment on a calf injury. Saturday's head-to-head will go a long way to deciding the eventual destination of the championship flag and Wilson's sheer speed and Somerville's cheeky creativity would help swing the pre-match odds in the Dingwall side's favour. In fact, after a disastrous 2-1 setback at the hands of a clever Keith side on Saturday, County, who have not won a game since Saturday, December 12, need all the help they can get to keep their title hopes alive. For the second successive week, chance after chance went begging as they dominated the first half of a game which saw 23-goal striker Brian Grant miss enough snips on his own to give County a badly-needed championship lift. Normally deadly in front of goal, Grant missed five sitters himself and between them Scott Lemmon, Gordon Connelly, Alan Duff and Gary Ross let another eight clear scoring chances go unconverted. "It was the same story at Fort William the week before--we played well and dominated the game but we couldn't put the ball in the net," said frustrated County manager Bobby Wilson. A string of 13 corners in the first half underlined County's share of the first-half possession, with recalled former Don Andy MacLeod and crafty Connelly running the show in midfield. But the Maroons' defensive organisation and a handful of crucial saves from an inspired Ian Thain helped keep the half-time score line blank to set up a win which extended their unbeaten run to nine games and which they thoroughly deserved. The Keith keeper made one mistake and it handed County their equaliser in 68 minutes. Thain hung back and allowed Gary ROSS to nip in and head home an innocuous looking Cammy Robertson up-and-under. Alan LESLIE had earlier coolly slipped Keith in front two minutes after the break as the Maroons quickly got a grip on the second-half proceedings and, after County equalised, Maroons sub Keith WATT took just two minutes to restore the visitors' lead. Leslie went close to extending Keith's lead with an impudent 40-yard effort eight minutes from time after catching Bellshaw in possession and Hutchison off his line and he hit the far post with a curled effort right on the final whistle. Keith's win made them only the second side to record a league double over County--the other was Huntly last season--since they won the first of their two back-to-back league titles. A clearly pleased Keith boss Jim Hamilton said: "We went out determined to win the toss, give County the wind advantage and try to turn around on level terms and once we achieved that I always fancied our chances. "The only downbeat aspects of the game were a red card for Mike Barclay for a second bookable offence late on and a head injury which meant we had to take Malcolm Thomson off and send him to hospital. "He should be okay for Saturday's Aberdeenshire Cup tie against Deveronvale."
