| Comments | Match Report Report by Mike Tremlett for the Press & Journal. Inverness Thistle 0 Ross County 4 Holders Ross County cruised past understrength Inverness Thistle at Kingsmills to book a berth in the Press and Journal Inverness Cup semi-finals with a comfortable 4-0 win. The architect was comeback man Barry Wilson, who celebrated his return to North soccer with a hand in three of County's goals, while new signing Tom Drummond can be quietly satisfied with his first appearance after joining from Fort William. Jags lost the tie in midfield where, having got the ball forward quickly on a number of occasions, they failed to support hard-working striking duo Tommy MacDonald and Martin Bell, who were too often left to try to beat County keeper Steve Hutchison from long range. County led 2-0 at half time, going ahead in 16 minutes when a Wilson chip left Grant to pick out DUFF who looped a six-yard header over the Jags keeper. Eight minutes before the break Wilson picked out SOMERVILLE, who exchanged a slick one-two with Duff and sent in a 12-yard grounder which squirmed under the body of the Thistle keeper. Comeback man Wilson collected a booking late in the first half and he was joined by Jags' Stevie Bremner early in the second half. Duff curled a right foot shot just past the diving Calder's left hand post in 56 minutes and they went even closer nine minutes later when a clever Wilson chip beat Calder but skidded off the top of the crossbar. Thistle's best chance came on the hour when Allan MacDonald nodded a great ball into the path of Colin MacLean. the flame-haired striker could not quite get his shot away under pressure from the alert Somerville. County playmaker Gordon Connelly collected the game's third booking midway through the half for a trip on Allan MacDonald as the Jags midfielder tried to inspire his team-mates with a powerful run. County netted a third in 75 minutes when DUFF side footed a simple goal from close range after combining with Grant. CONNELLY added No. 4 in 84 minutes with a 25-yard shot with Calder fumbled and allowed to bounce over his head. |
