Ross County 0 Saint Mirren 2 Ross County's long unbeaten run came to an end when they lost to First Division champions-elect St Mirren at Victoria Park on Saturday. The Dingwall team was last defeated in the league back in mid-December, but was well beaten on this occasion by a side close to clinching the title. St Johnstone's victory at Brechin was all that denied the travelling support a party at County's expense. County director of football, George Adams took charge of team affairs after the shock departure of Gardner Speirs in mid-week. The former Rangers, Celtic and Aberdeen youth coach readily conceded that the visitors deserved the points. "We paid for not taking our chances in the first half," said Adams. "But I think it was a comfortable win for St Mirren, although I was pleased that we created so many chances." When asked if the appointment of a new manager was imminent, Adams said: "We are looking to fill the position sooner rather than later. We wouldn't like to be in the position of going through the close season without having made an appointment." Adams also revealed that the club had received a number of enquiries about the position. County made an impressive start to the game. Alex Burke had a great chance to open the scoring in the third minute when he got on the end of a Sean Higgins pass, but former County keeper Tony Bullock pulled off a marvellous save to deny the striker. Somewhat against the run of play, the Buddies took the lead in the 16th minute. Simon Lappin crossed for Stewart Kean, who scored with a driving header. County should have been back on level terms nine minutes from the break when Higgins released Don Cowie, but the midfielder's shot was smothered by Bullock. County keeper Ian McCaldon had to be replaced by teenager Joe Malin and the start of the second half and the youngster did well to stop a long-range effort from Kean. But Malin was beaten in the 63rd minute when a deep cross from Charlie Adam was headed in at the back post by John Sutton.
