Ross County 2 Hamilton Academical 1 Ross County closed the gap on First Division leaders St Mirren with this victory against Hamilton Accies at Victoria Park. Ross County are now just six points behind the Saints with a game in hand, but needed a fair degree of luck to take all three points. Accies, on the back of a nine-match unbeaten run, created more scoring chances than their hosts with former Caley Thistle player Juanjo and substitute Brian Wake guilty of missing easy opportunities. But goals from Sean Higgins and David Winters either side of a Brown Ferguson counter gave County victory and kept their title hopes very much alive. The result also gave Ross County a major boost before tomorrow night's Scottish Cup fourth round replay with Falkirk, and with only three defeats in 15 games in charge caretaker manager Gardner Speirs must be very close to being offered the job full time. Speirs conceded his side did not play at its best, but said: "I am very pleased with the result, but we were a bit upset we didn't play as well as we are capable of. "Credit to that must go to Hamilton. They are a very difficult team to break down, but we're just delighted to get the win." County took the lead in the 26th minute in spectacular style. Cowie found Kevin McKinlay wide on the left and his lofted ball across the 18-yard box was volleyed into the net by Higgins. Hamilton Accies were back on level terms eight minutes later when Ferguson was given acres of room in the middle of the park and his shot from 25 yards ended up in the net. The home side secured the points in the 75th minute when Burke got behind the Accies defence and his delicate chip was headed high into the net by the unmarked Winters.
