Ross County 2 Brechin City 0
John Rankin was the Ross County hero with a couple of superb goals in a comfortable victory against struggling Brechin City at Victoria Park yesterday.
Rankin produced the type of form which is attracting so much attention from leading clubs with another inspired display.
After a slow start County took control and Rankin had a shot deflected past for the first corner of the game in the 10th minute.
Rankin and Don Cowie both produced efforts which cleared the crossbar before the pressure paid off in the 28th minute when RANKIN made the break-through in spectacular style.
Kevin McKinlay played a short corner to midfielder and his shot flew into the far corner.
Steve Hampshire and Craig Winter both came close for City before County doubled their lead on the stoke of half time.
Former County favourite Steve Ferguson gave away a free kick outside the area and RANKIN curled his shot into the top corner.
Rankin almost completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute but he was denied by a fine blocking save from keeper Craig Nelson.
At the other end, it was Stuart Garden's turn to save from Gerry Britton and Hampshire.
Rankin was out of luck again when he fired into the side netting and Alex Burke blasted one over as County finished well on top.
