| Match Report | Report from the North Star. Forres Mechanics 0 Ross County 2 It was no mean feat to register a win at Forres and the County supporters must feel confident that their favourites have actually recovered their best form. The Ross defence again distinguished itself by displaying very sound tactics in a rousing game, which was full of thrills. Particular praise was due to Macneil, County's custodian, who gave a superb goalkeeping exhibition. On numerous occasions it was only Macneil's brilliant saves which prevented the Mechanics from registering goals. In an attack that has shown much improvement through the prompting of Grant, Morgan Mackay maintained his recent fine form, and he again figured among the scorers. Mackay has secured five goals in the last three games. The County's revival has brightened their prospects in the first round of the North of Scotland Cup-tie at Nairn. At the commencement Forres immediately made tracks for the County goal, and were awarded five corners in three minutes. The visitors were hemmed into their own goalmouth and Macneil had to step lively to stop drives from Black and Shand. The Mechanics continued to monopolise matters, and Corbett and Macneil were dour defenders in the Ross-shire team. The goalkeeper was warmly applauded when he deflected a powerful drive from J. Dickie. The County made isolated raids, but Phimister had only to field loose balls. Shand burst through for Forres, but Macneil went down full length to effect a brilliant save. A fine combined run saw J. A. Mackay miss a fine opportunity. The visitors put a spurt on after J. Ross missed an open goal. J. A. Mackay tested Phimister with a fierce drive. The locals claimed a goal following a scrimmage round the visitors' goalmouth, but the referee ignored the appeal. Midfield exchanges characterised the resumption, but gradually Forres applied pressure, although their finishing was weak. The County forwards kept the Mechanics' defence busy. Corners came at frequent intervals for the homesters but they proved of no avail. A clever solo run by J. G. Mackay resulted in his cross being tapped home by D. Ross to open the County scoring. This reverse spurred on Forres, and a golden chance was lost when a Macdonald pass swept across an open goalmouth. Play was now more lively. The visitors' defence was sorely harassed to keep off the eager Forres attack. Mechanics launched a desperate attack on the County goal, but heroic work by Macneil defied the homesters. Morgan Mackay settled the issue by notching a second goal with a first-timed shot from close range. |
