Caledonian FC 0 Ross County 3

At the Telford Street Park, Inverness, on Saturday, Ross County easily accounted for Caledonian by 3 goals to 0. Throughout the game the County were more impressive, although their forwards were very faulty in shooting, particularly during the first half. A feature of the game was the good defensive play shown by the young Ross-shire backs, Ross and Jack. The latter was in great form, playing the best game of his senior career. But Jack also excelled on the offensive. His midfield foul-kick, which opened the County’s scoring, early in the second period, was a spectacular goal and fully merited the all-round applause accorded. From Forsyth at centre-half the visiting defenders received able support, his head-work being very sound.
Against such a strong opposition the young Caledonian forwards could make no impression and even the famous home left wingman, Dalgleish, had a very quiet day, Jack being his master to the extent of completely subduing him.
Ross County had a disappointment within a few minutes of the start. They were awarded a penalty for a home defender handling, but Macdonald, right-half, sent the spot kick yards past the upright. Numerous opportunities came to the Ross-shire attack, but not one player appeared capable of finding the net. The County’s shooting and finishing was lamentable. In fact they should have registered at least three goals during this half. The home forwards were also erratic but they did not receive as many openings as the opposition.
The goal netted by Jack, from a terrific drive, which completely deceived Machean, had a steadying influence on the visiting front line. Their efforts were now much more direct on goal and a well-placed corner kick taken by Ross resulted in Gowl adding the second. The centre later increased the total by rushing in and netting after Machean had failed to hold a powerful drive from Birrell. The homesters were also much livelier during this half, but only Warburton, outside left, caused Mackenzie any anxiety. This wingman had two great tries, which the county keeper did well to stop. Had it not been for the powerful defensive tactic displayed by Matheson, the home centre-half, the Ross-shire team’s score would have reached a higher total. The game was not a very attractive one and the attendance was very disappointing.
