Inverness Clachnacuddin 0 Ross County 3 Ross County surged back to the top of the TSB Highland League last night with the help of a double from former Brechin striker Brian Grant, who took his haul to 19 goals since joining the Dingwall club last September. More than 1000 fans saw courageous Clach eventually overcome by County, who rediscovered their poise and spirit in a match marred by the gales and squalls. In conditions more suited to yacht racing than creative football, it became a battle of persistence rather than a question of constructive play. But after their mini-slump of the past two games, Ross County showed commendable determination to ease themselves two points ahead of Caley and the Dingwall men have a game in hand. Not that Ross looked convincing in the first half, despite having the lion's share of play. The passing skill of Connelly, Ferries and Williamson were negated by the wind and, with Clach closing down swiftly and chasing everything, it was an uncomfortable time for the visitors. However, they gradually began to pick the lock and Ronnie Traynor, the ex-St Johnstone keeper who had a very useful gama for Clach, held good low drives from Grant and Robertson. The breakthrough came in 39 minutes when Ferries clipped a beautiful through ball to send GRANT striding clear and he lobbed the outcoming keeper. Clach started the second half strongly but were caught napping in 59 minutes when Connelly's inch-perfect free kick saw BELLSHAW send a powerful header into the far corner of the net. County then created a host of chances. Their third goal in 79 minutes came when Wilson's wickedly swerving corner left the keeper stranded and GRANT headed into an empty net. County should have had more goals in the closing stages but Grant, after a beautiful piece of skill, was foiled of his hat-trick by a spectacular save from Traynor.
