Ross County 1 Meadowbank Thistle 6 The loudest cheer of the day in Dingwall on Saturday came just after the final whistle sounded the end of Ross County's adventures in the Tennents Scottish Cup. It came from the home dressing room and signalled the arrival of the news from Telford Street that TSB Highland League championship rivals Caley had missed the chance to snatch the league lead. "The 3-3 Caley result was an immediate pick-me-up for everybody and it will make sure that the players are ready to get back to the business of winning league games as quickly as possible," said County manager Bobby Wilson. "It stopped us feeling sorry for ourselves for too long. Beaton 6-1 by Meadowbank Thistle in front of more than 4,000 fans, the County players and manager Wilson could have been forgiven for dwelling on a performance which fell well short of their normally high standards. Manager Wilson revealed that Scot Lemmon, who has forged a case-hardened central defensive partnership with Johnston Bellshaw, had been forced to call off with gastric flu. Things got no better in the eighth minute when BELLSHAW turned a Wattie Boyd corner past Ross Cathcart to hand the visitors the lead after a near post header by Bobby Forrest deceived the County keeper. County had started brightly, with Billy Ferries dancing past three Thistle defenders to shave the crossbar with a shot. In the 20-odd minutes between the unlucky setback and Bobby FORREST's 35th minute goal, Thistle keeper Jim McQueen broke County's hearts with a string of inspired saves. McQueen made only one mistake and it handed County a lifeline when he missed a Ferries corner. Grant nodded the ball back across the goalmouth and Alan DUFF hammered the ball home from point blank range to make the score 2-1 But the award of a soft penalty, when Forrest crashed to the deck under a Bellshaw challenge, signalled the end. Davie ROSEBURGH hammered the spot kick home and four minutes later HE cashed in on a suicidal headed pass back from Albert Allan to stretch the First Division side's lead. A diving header from Willie IRVINE and a BOYD effort curled around Cathcart from 15 yards rounded off the scoring. Manager Wilson said: "Hopefully, people will remember our cup campaign for the victories rather than Saturday's score-line."
