Ross County 2 Rothes 0 Ross County continued their steady progress in the Highland League competition with a 2-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Rothes, a team which belies its lowly position, because they gave the home side plenty to think about as they struggled to find their scoring touch. Supporters too were given much to think about as they watched the encounter with bated breath for this was the type of game in which the under-dogs could well have come through and dented the Ross club's title hopes. To the very end, and only when Scott Lemmon's brilliant header made victory secure, were the County faithful able to relax and enjoy the weekend. County (37 points) were six points clear of Forres Mechanics, at the weekend, and nine of Caley (who have a game in hand) and Peterhead. Elgin City are very handily placed with 27 points from 12 games, so the championship is fairly wide open, with every point coveted. A draw last Saturday would not have helped County much in the run-in, but they did not allow the Rothes team an inch on the rain-soaked pitch which was cutting up down the middle. It was not until the 44th minute that County took the lead at the close of a half in which both sides struggled for ascendancy. The goal when it came was a beauty, the move starting with a cross from Gary Campbell, who broke down the left before switching the ball over to the right wing to Billy Ferries. Billy made for the by-line, turned his opponent and with the ball at his left foot struck it into the six yard box, where Johnston BELLSHAW was waiting to strike it home. This is the worth of Ferries for he can cross a ball accurately with either foot, when other players are struggling to bring it on to their stronger foot with sometimes consequences that were not desired. It was midway through the second half that County had cause for concern, when twice in succession Rothes almost grabbed the equaliser. However, both occasions Mike Ure was alive to the situation, making a brilliant diving save from substitute Thomson, and then tipping a dropping shot over the crossbar for a corner. It was in the second period that County really began to assert themselves, producing some of their more sparkling play. A Ferries corner kick was headed down by Lemmon to Alan Duff, but his shot went just wide of the goal. Duff was again off target with a diving header from a cross by Brian Grant, who had taken the ball from a County clearance, and opened up the Rothes defence. A Williamson header from Ferries corner was just off target, and in the 86th minute came LEMMON's brilliant counter from another Ferries corner and the points were sewn up. Minutes later another scorching header from Lemmon, again from a Ferries corner, scraped the bar, the keeper well beaten.
