Inverness Clachnaduddin 1 Ross County 2 Champions Ross County leapfrogged Cove Rangers to go to the top of the TSB Highland League for the first time this season thanks to Brian Grant's superbly taken effort which put the former Dundee and Brechin player on the 40-goal mark. The Dingwall men ran out deserved winners to give them the ideal tonic for Saturday's McEwan's Lager North Cup final watched by Neil MacIntosh, assistant manager of cup opponents Lossiemouth. But all credit to Clach for a battling display which ensured the title holders could never quite relax enough to turn on the style. Three Clach players--John Douglas, Peter Hardie and John Bain--were booked along with Ross County's Barry Wilson. Former Don Andy McLeod's sparkling performance as substitute for County was the highlight of a very competitive and workmanlike contest. County took the lead in 15 minutes when Sandy MacLEOD powered home a tremendous header from Connelly's cross. They seemed on easy street five minutes later when GRANT made space for himself 20 yards out and wheeled to strike a beauty in to the top left-hand corner of the net with the keeper helpless. That made him the first Highland League player for 14 years to reach the 40-goal mark. But, within a minute, Clach struck back. Bennett's powerful free kick rebounded off keeper Hutcheson and BAIN lashed it in to the roof of the net. County were well in control at half time, but they lost the place for a considerable part of the second half as the Merkinch men showed strength and spirit to interrupt County's rhythm. Clach were unlucky when Bain twice blasted in from point-blank range only for Bellshaw and then Sandy MacLeod to block superbly. At the other end, Duff sent Grant through and he dribbled round the keeper, but his shot trickled along the goal line and was cleared. The home side staged a rousing finish in whish County were relieved to hear the final whistle.
