Ross County 1 Inverness Thistle 0 League champions Ross County yesterday celebrated reaching the Scottish Cup for the third successive season by signing sweeper Albert Allan on a new two-year contract. Allan was an ever-present in the title winning team, but has not played this season following a cartilage operation. However, he made his come-back in the reserves on Saturday and manager Bobby Wilson set the seal on Allan's day by clinching the new deal. Not so happy is Inverness Thistle boss Jim Leishman, whose hopes of Scottish Cup glory were shattered by Ross County's 1-0 win at Dingwall. And also unhappy is Thistle goalkeeper Jim Calder. He will be fined by the club for being ordered off on Saturday. Calder was booked when he hauled down Gordon CONNELLY--who slotted home the resultant penalty. Three minutes later, Calder pulled down Billy Ferries well outside the box--and was red carded. "Jim Calder will be punished for that," said manager Leishman yesterday. "But I can't fault my team for effort--they battled hard in a very hard game. "What came through to me very strongly was the tremendous pressure there is in such a situation with a Scottish Cup place at stake." Bobby Wilson said: "There was too much tension for it to be an attractive game, but I think we just deserved to win it. "After going so well in the national tourney last year, it is a boost to be back in it--and we can't wait for next month's draw." County's only problem is midfield man Robert Allan. He twisted a knee and misses tomorrow's trip to Keith. Johnstone Bellshaw, the only player in the County side for whom Wilson has paid a transfer fee, has proved to be a bargain buy. His commanding display in the centre of defence on Saturday underlined this and the Black Isle lad was the finest player afield. Connelly's creativity also marked him out in a match in which the 1,600 fans saw too much dour, ragged play. Thistle striker Willie Callaghan again looked threatening. but lacked support. Special mention must go to Mike Noble, who went in goal when Calder was ordered off. He produced three superb saves.
