Inverness Thistle 3 Ross County 1 TSB Highland League champions Ross County slumped to their first defeat of the season when jaunty Jags demolished them in a rip-roaring affair at Kingsmills. Mike Noble, who celebrated his return from shoulder trouble by scoring the winner in Saturday's cup tie with Clach, inspired Thistle with a double and he and Alan Macdonald and Billy Spence achieved a rare midfield mastery over the League Cup winners. County had their fair share of chances, but found Allan Stevenson and his fellow defenders in fine fettle and this shock result must ring alarm bells for the champions as the teams meet again at Dingwall in 10 days for a place in the Scottish Cup. Both teams had their spells of intense pressure in a fast, eventful 90 minutes, but the home side was lethargic up front and too often County were caught in possession by the swift-tackling Jags. The opener came in 17 minutes when Williamson was caught in possession by Noble, Callaghan raced through, the ball spun off Allan's heel and NOBLE was following up to crash home a great, low drive. Both Wilsons, Thistle's Billy and County's Barry, were booked for hand ball before jags went two up in 32 minutes. Bellshaw was booked for a tackle on Callaghan and from the free kick SPENCE cracked it low and hard through the wall, with the help of a deflection. Calder than saved Connelly's point blank try with his knees. Thistle started the second half in superb form and it was no surprise when they went further ahead in 65 minutes, Spence's corner leading to a melee in which NOBLE wheeled on the six yard line to force the ball home. County gained a consolation goal in the final minute, substitute Jamie McPHERSON scrambling the ball home from close range.
