Ross County 4 Cove Rangers 1 The odds on Ross County hitting the Scottish Cup headlines again this season shortened dramatically at Victoria Park on Saturday when they dumped holders Cove Rangers out of the Qualifying Cup. County striker Brian GRANT, the North's top scorer this season, rattled in two early goals and the contest was as good as over when GRANT completed a hat-trick inside 27 minutes. Barry WILSON added County's fourth six minutes into the second half, leaving George STEPHEN to notch a consolation counter for Cove 15 minutes from time. "It was one of those ties which could easily have finished seven goals each, but we took our chances and they didn't," said County manager Bobby Wilson, who revealed that Grant nearly didn't start. "I almost left him out because he is the sort of player who needs to feel he is under a bit of pressure before he produces his best form, bur I'm obviously glad i didn't. "We've got Inverness Thistle at home in the third round with a place in the Scottish Cup at stake. That makes our league match at Kingsmills on Wednesday night a very interesting game." Cove manager Dave Watson was philosophical in defeat and pointed to the defensive errors which handed County such a great start. He said: "We have been playing well defensively so far this season with only three goals against, but we had a fit of the horrors in Dingwall. "There isn't a side in the league who can give County a two-goal start and came back from such a setback. We couldn't possibly have done their confidence more good than we did in the first seven minutes."
