Elgin City 0 Ross County 5 The long knives could be out at Borough Briggs this week after Elgin City suffered their most humiliating home Qualifying Cup defeat in living memory on Saturday. City, who had shown signs of turning the corner in midweek, were comprehensively dismantled by rampant Ross County, who struck the first psychological blow before a ball was kicked. City manager Brian Black had to make a team change just before the kick-off when County manager Bobby Wilson pointed out that new signing John Teasdale was ineligible to play. The County manager explained: "I had a sneaking suspicion last week that Teasdale could not play because he had not signed before the first match of the tie was played. "A check with the SFA proved that to be the case and when we saw his name on the Elgin team line we pointed it out to City, who had no chose but to pull him out." When the replay kicked off things got no better for the home side as the roof fell in on them during a first half which saw County book their place in the second round without breaking sweat. Alan Duff stepped over a low Cammy Robertson corner in the fifth minute and Brian GRANT side footed County ahead. Gordon CONNELLY dived to bullet a header past Morrison on the half-hour and DUFF himself headed home a Barry Wilson cross to kill City off in just over half-an-hour. A left-foot volley from Johnston BELLSHAW in 70 minutes saw the league champions lift the tempo late on. County substitute Jamie MCPHERSON chipped over Morrison two minutes from time to make the final score 5-0. "We went to Borough Briggs determined not to repeat the mistakes which made the replay necessary in the first place," said County manager Wilson. The County front three of Wilson, Duff and Grant had things almost totally their own way against a City defence who looked static. In midfield, Graeme Bennett, Mike Teasdale and Russell MacKay--the only City player apart from keeper Morrison to emerge from the game with any credit--were totally over-run by Connelly, Chris Somerville, Cammy Robertson and Robert Allan. Johnston Bellshaw and standin sweeper Robbie Williamson contained the City strikers and youngster Gary Campbell again proved that he has matured into a fine defender.
