Deveronvale 2 Ross County 5 A powerful second-half performance by champions Ross County proved too much for brave Deveronvale in Saturday's Press and Journal Highland League fixture at Princess Royal Park. While County came away with the points, a lot of credit goes to Vale, who found themselves trailing by two goals after 27 minutes only to bounce back with two stunning counters and with a little luck might have stolen a half-time lead. After the break, it was County all the way. Using the wide open spaces of Princess Royal Park to the full, the visitors turned on a brand of one-touch football which was rewarded with three further goals to the delight of the Dingwall side's supporters in a healthy crowd. Vale assistant boss Tom Cummings was quick to praise the Dingwall side, saying: "Our players know what standard is required to become genuine championship challengers. "County are an excellent side and I envy Bobby Wilson his depth of pool. They came here today minus three or four of their regulars and still managed to turn on a top-class performance. "I was pleased we fought back after being two goals down and, had we managed to score a third before half-time, anything could have happened, but we badly missed Bradley Kerr and Eddie Wolacki." Ross County went in front in 14 minutes. Ivor Hughes failed to cut out a cross ball from Alan Duff and Tom DRUMMOND was on hand to side foot the loose ball home. The Dingwall side increased their lead in 27 minutes. Hughes parried an Alan Duff shot and Chris SOMERVILLE followed up to fire home the rebound. The Vale fans were on their feet in 32 minutes when full back Steve DOLAN sent a raging left-foot shot past Hutchison into the roof of the net from fully 35 yards. Two minutes later Neil CLARK levelled matters when he gave the County keeper no chance with a first-time rocket shot from 25 yards. Deveronvale suffered a cruel blow in 58 minutes when Colin MASSIE attempting to clear a Cammy Robertson corner, deflected the ball past keeper Hughes to put the visitors ahead. Gordon CONNELLY added a fourth in 76 minutes, finishing off a fine move between Brian Grant and Alan Duff, and GRANT completed the scoring in 84 minutes when he headed home a cross from Duff. A happy Ross County manager Bobby Wilson said: "It has been an excellent week for us after retaining the Press and Journal Inverness Cup on Monday and getting the points against Vale." Manager Wilson paid tribute to newcomer Drummond when he said: "What a great signing he has been for us. He is a quality player who has fitted in to our system excellently."
