Brora Rangers 2 Ross County 3 Ross County had to come from behind at Telford Street last night to retain the Press and Journal Inverness Cup after being put through the mill by battling Brora Rangers. The first half of an entertaining game played in sticky underfoot conditions went completely Brora's way as they capitalised on the absence of suspended County playmaker Gordon Connelly, right back Chris Somerville and late call-off Sandy Macleod. Taking the game by the scruff of the neck, the Sutherland side roared to a 2-0 lead with headed goals from David Ross and Donald Allan and might have been as many as five goals to the good had their finishing been better. But they found themselves up against it five minutes before half-time when a red card for left back Jocky Begg reduced them to 10 men and handed County a lifeline from the penalty spot. The second half, predictable, saw County the game on its head, with an early equaliser from Robbie Williamson. And Brora could do little once Brian Grant put County ahead midway through the second half. It was undoubtedly a tremendous comeback from the cup holders, whose grip on the trophy looked precarious during the first half. A mistake by Johnston Bellshaw, who lost his footing on the edge of the County 18-yard box, saw Brora go ahead after just 12 minutes. Gary Farquhar pounced on the loose ball, slipped a neat square-pass to Donald Ross and his chipped cross was steered beautifully wide of the County keeper by namesake Davis ROSS. Four minutes later, Donald ALLAN towered above the static County defence to bullet home a great header from a corner as Brora threatened to stream roller the cup holders aside. Four minutes before half-time Brora paid for several misses when Begg decked Alan Duff just inside the Brora box and GRANT hammered home the resulting penalty kick. Seven minutes into the second half, Robbie WILLIAMSON raced in to meet Stewart's cross with a great diving header to complete County's recovery. GRANT clinched matters in 75 minutes when he pounced on a loose ball to drill a crisp shot past McMillan for the winner.
