Ross County 4 Banks O'Dee 0 Ross County ran out 4-0 victors against Breedon Highland League visitors Banks o’ Dee for their second successive KDM Evolution Trophy win this season. The League One Staggies have now won seven successive games in all competitions and are unbeaten in any of their 10 games, including winning all three league games. Lewis Jamieson struck early to give the Staggies the lead and Kieran Phillips doubled the scoreline on 28 minutes. Teenager Joe Coyle stepped off the bench to add another goal in the second half before Phillips’ penalty was the icing on the cake. These teams had met only once before competitively, with County winning 2-0 in Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup last November under the management of Tony Docherty. This clash brought together two managers who were Ross County team-mates, the hosts’ Stuart Kettlewell and Dee’s co-boss Paul Lawson, who won the Championship and Challenge Cup for the Dingwall club. This was the second fixture of the six-game opening round, with County coming off the back of a late 2-1 win at League Two hosts Elgin City and Dee losing their first match 5-1 against League One side Peterhead. County, as they did against Elgin, fielded a much changed line-up compared to their League One starters, with only Adam Forrester retained from the weekend’s 3-1 win at Airdrie. Banks o’ Dee, who drew 2-2 at Huntly at the weekend, are 10th in the Highland League, made three changes, with Dugald Farquhar, Kevin Hanratty and Magnus Watson stepping into the starting side. Ross County broke the deadlock on the ninth minute. Sparked by a long ball from Josh Reid, ex-St Mirren starlet Jamieson kept his composure in the box to guide his right-footed shot past goalkeeper Jack Robertson into the net after Kieran Phillips set him up. Banks o’ Dee recovered well though and were soon earning a few set-pieces to ask questions at the other end of the park. However, just before the half hour mark, Phillips was put through on goal by Hearts loanee Forrester and he rifled an angled shot beyond Robertson for number two to open his account for the season. Mark Gilmour’s shot from the edge of the box just before the break required a stop from home goalkeeper Brad Wade, which followed a fine cross from Watson, which was crying for a Dee attacker in the box to finish it. Forrester, who was in dazzling form, almost capped his hour-long performance with a goal before being subbed when he cut inside the box and his shot was touched on to the inside of the post by Robertson. Banks o’ Dee then fired their best warning shot moments later as Grady McGrath was denied by Wade from point-blank range. County put the game out of reach on 62 minutes when 18-year-old striker Coyle, who is on a cooperation loan at Highland League side Invergordon, slotted home a third goal after winger Richard Chin picked him out barely a minute after coming on. Wade saved a drive from substitute Hamish MacLeod as the visitors kept looking for at least a consolation, but there was no way through. A Phillips spot-kick after sub Luke McCarvel was taken down in the penalty area made it 4-0 on 73 minutes. A Michael Phillipson free-kick late on stung the palms of Wade, but County remained unscathed.
