Queen's Park 0 Ross County 1
New Ross County striker Uche Ikpeazu delivered a debut goal to seal a crucial 1-0 Championship win at relegation rivals Queen’s Park in Glasgow.
One of the three deadline day signings for Stuart Kettlewell popped up with a vital headed winner to lift County back one point clear of their opponents and now just one point behind eighth-placed Airdrieonians.
The Dingwall team returned to the foot of the division on Saturday after losing 2-1 at Morton, while the Spiders leapfrogged them by winning 2-1 against third-top Arbroath, which created a two-point opening in the Glasgow team’s favour.
However, after 2-0 and 1-0 wins against Partick and Airdrie, this was another massive result for Kettlewell, who returned to the hotseat in the new year.
With no fixture this weekend due to being out of the Scottish Cup, County’s next game is at home to Queen’s Park on February 14.
Kettlewell knows that was another big result for his battling side after his signing from St Johnstone headed home the vital goal.
He said: “It was a big three points. You give yourself a mountain to climb if you don’t come away with something tonight.
“It’s not to say any anything is finished or done but it was a big result. We now have nine points out of 12 since we’ve come in and three clean sheets.
“This was always going to be a really difficult game, but we had the biggest chances in the game.
“Ultimately, Alex Iacovitti (who provided the cross) and Uche came up with the big moment. It was a high quality cross from our centre back and big Uche did fantastic to stoop down and guide it into the bottom corner.
“It was never going to be a night of blowing a team away 4-0 or 5-0. The game was going to hinge on a big moment and, fortunately for us, we stood strong.
“We were a wee bit loose in the first half, but we rectified that a wee bit in the second half.
“I am looking to the next 10 days without a game and the chance to work with the players because it has been a hectic period for us.
“The blip on Saturday hurt us all but we showed a great reaction.”
And Kettlewell spoke about his match-winner and explained how in his 25-minute appearance he gave so much, as well as scoring.
He added: “We know what Uche can do. We all seen him at Hearts and he had limited opportunity at St Johnstone, but had a serious injury within that time as well.
“He’s infectious and a brilliant human being. He will add a really good dimension to our team. You could see that.
“But you could also see he was blowing a wee bit towards the end. He was tired. He tells me he’s not slept a wink in the last 48 hours, so he will sleep well tonight and I am sure the Ross County fans who travelled here tonight would have enjoyed his performance along with his team-mates.
“For us though, we have done nothing. We need to utilise these next 10 days to make sure we’re ready to face Queen’s Park again.”
The deadline day capture of forward Ikpeazu piqued the interest of Staggies fans on the back of selling Northern Ireland international forward Ronan Hale to League Two Gillingham last week for £250,000.
The two changes from the weekend saw James Scott and Kieran Phillips come in for Ryan Duncan and Jay Henderson.
This game at the City Stadium, tucked beside Hampden Park, was set for November 21, but was called off 15 minutes before kick-off due to a frozen pitch.
