Ross County 2 Partick Thistle 1
John Lambie reckons Quinton Jacobs would Rocket to stardom--if only he'd learn to take a blast at goal when chances beckon.
The Namibian international's brilliant display for 10-man Thistle buried the myth that African players don't like mixing it in the snow and ice.
And as Jacobs leaves the sub-zero temperatures of Scotland today for a short break in the sun and heat of his homeland, he will depart with Lambie's words ringing in his ears.
The Thistle manager saw a foolish act by former Scotland youth keeper Kevin Budinaukas turn the course of the match. He hauled down ex-Jags striker George Shaw in the penalty area to prevent a certain goal and was red-carded by the referee after only 23 minutes.
While Budinaukas was the obvious villain, Lambie was left frustrated by Jacobs.
He said: "Quinton played superbly and got himself into some great positions. He scored a good goal and can hit the ball like a rocket, so I just wish he'd shoot more often when he gets the chance.
"I don't have an argument with the referee over the penalty. It would have been better if Kevin had just let Shaw score. I can understand why he did it but he knows the mistake he made."
Shaw netted the 24th-minute spot-kick with Albert Craig helpless in goal and a sensational strike by Roy McBain three minutes after the break had County cruising to their third consecutive win.
However, Jacobs's speed and subtle touch helped inspire a spirited Jags fightback and the gifted midfielder netted with a deflected drive to cause a real sweat in County ranks during the last 11 minutes.
Jacobs admitted afterwards it was the first time he had ever seen snow. He said: "I have never known cold like this and I had never seen snow before--I was amazed when some of the spectators made a snowman before the game.
"I just had to lift up the snow and touch it--and I am sure my mother and father and my brothers and sister will be just as amazed as I was when I tell them about it when I get home.
"And I will also be able to tell them about the hills in Scotland and now they were covered in snow."
While County will be glad to have escaped the Jacobs-inspired fight-back, they probably deserved their win after dominating the game for the first hour.
Indeed when the floodlight failed in the 58th minute for a full 17 minutes, with County leading 2-0, Lambie must have been hoping for a postponement.
Shaw should have had a second penalty when Ray Montgomerie sent him crashing in 73 minutes.
County manager Neale Cooper certainly felt aggrieved, saying: "It was a stonewall penalty. We were well on top and that would have clinched it but then we lost a deflected goal and pressure was right back on us.
"At the end of the day what counts is three wins out of three and a victory against Partick who are the form side.
"We should have killed them off long before but they moved Jacobs into the middle and that threw us a bit. He's an excellent player."
