| Comments | Match Report Report by Bill McAllister for the Press & Journal. Ross County 4 Albion Rovers 1 Former Elgin ace Willie Furphy's first Third Division goal helped take Ross County back to third place in the promotion battle, only 24 hours after Montrose had pushed them down to fourth It was a workmanlike rather than convincing performance as Rovers kept the issue in doubt until a late double sent the 967 fans home happy. Another home win over Queen's Park on Saturday can reinforce County's promotion challenge, but Ross manager Bobby Wilson said "We didn't play anything like as well as we did in our draw at Alloa on Saturday--yet we took our chances. The Coatbridge men dominated early on, creating a series of chances, only to be caught out in 26 minutes when Williamson sent Connolly striding clear through the middle. Keeper John Wight blocked his shot, but Alan Duff crashed home the rebound for only his second Third Division goal. Former Everton and Hibs man Joe McBride hit the bar with a clever chip near the interval. Wight had a double save from Grant early in the second half, but it was still tight, broken play on a cut-up pitch. Furphy put County two ahead in 70 minutes when he kept his cool to fire the ball in off the near post. But four minutes later a corner was only cleared as far as Dave Seggie, who fired it low and hard into the net from the edge of the box. Rovers continued to cause problems, but County boosted their goal difference with a big finish. Gordon Connolly swept the ball home from 12 yards for County's 50th Scottish League goal and a minute later came the pick of the bunch, the outstanding home player Billy Ferries storming from his own half to finish with a fine, low drive. Four players were booked, County's Bellshaw and Riley, McEwen and Beattie of Rovers. Rovers' left back John Gallacher was taken to hospital for X-ray for a suspected broken tibia. |
