Ross County 2 Forfar Athletic 1
Cock-a-hoop Ross County handed Third Division leaders Forfar a major promotion setback and did their own chances no end of good at Victoria Park last night.
County extended their unbeaten league run to six games--five of them wins--with a polished win over 10-man Forfar.
A Gordon Connelly header on the stroke of half-time and Jamie Macpherson's 10th goal of the season midway through the second half, after Forfar defender Eric Archibald was sent 0ff, left the Easter Ross side sitting just four points behind the Angus men.
County grabbed the lead just before half-time, skipper Connelly hitting a well-judged header over the stranded Forfar keeper after Chris Somerville spotted his well-timed run and picked him out with a chip.
County were handed a telling advantage in 60 minutes when Archibald was sent off for hauling down Counter striker Brian Grant as he broke through with just the keeper to beat.
Three minutes later, the match looked over as a contest when Connelly slipped the ball down the inside left channel and Macpherson calmly put County 2-0 ahead from the edge of the 18-yard box.
Forfar pulled a goal back in 75 minutes when Morgan's cross was half-cleared and, with Hutchison rooted on the County line. Sandy Ross wheeled at the far post to thump the ball into the empty net.
In the dying minutes, County survived a couple of anxious moments. Ross fired just wide and striking partner Steve McCormack could have done better with a header. County, who have charged up the table, will now relish Saturday's trip to Cowdenbeath.
