Albion Rovers 0 Ross County 1
Bring on Alloa--that is the war cry from Ross County's Coatbridge match-winner Robbie Williamson, who has set up Dingwall men for Saturday's Scottish Cup showdown at Recreation Park.
Midfielder Robbie grabbed his fourth goal of the season to subdue the Third Division's bottom side and haul County back up with the main pack. But he also collected a booking at Cliftonhill which destines him for his first Scottish League suspension.
"Thankfully, it won't take effect till after the cup tie as long as Alloa is playable this Saturday," said Robbie. "The main thing is that we're all geared to gain revenge for the defeat at Alloa in the third round last year which cost us a glamour trip to Ibrox."
Williamson's power has been a key asset to County but he revealed that his 64th-minute winner against Rovers owed much to luck.
"Jamie Macpherson had a go and I deflected it away from the keeper," he said. "It was a bit of a fluke but we certainly deserved the goal on play.
"It was a scrappy affair but we proved we could battle and, though Albion were on top in the first half, our determination showed through and we might have had another couple of goals. It's a result which has whetted our appetite for Alloa, where the same kind of determined approach can pay dividends."
Johnston Bellshaw was immense at centre half for the Dingwall men, whose defence has not now conceded a goal in its last three games. Ex-Cowdenbeath man Billy Herd was a star stand-in at sweeper--though Willie Furphy's suspension is complete and he is certain to be recalled by manager Bobby Wilson for this Saturday.
Alloa manager Bill Lamont had a spy at Coatbridge to check on County and will recognise that his men have a scrap on their hands--particularly as Alloa slumped to an unexpected defeat from third-bottom Queen's Park, twice beaten by County.
Manager Wilson was also encouraged that his team came through unscathed in their first competitive game in almost a month and his players have thus been able to shake off any rustiness ahead of their historic first Scottish Cup tie as a Scottish League outfit.
"It was a terrible game--one of the worst I've seen--but my players dug deer and got a result and that augurs well for the cup tie," he said.
Jamie Macpherson, playing his first competitive game since being injured at Hampden on October 1, came off with 20 minutes to go, but it was only to save his stamina rather than feeling any ill-effects.
