Livingston 3 Ross County 1
Bobby Williamson may have been here to check out the performance of Andy Smith, the Kilmarnock midfielder on loan to Ross County, but he must have been impressed by the polish of the home side.
Mind you, he had to wait a while. At first the golden boys had lost some of their sparkle, Livingston labouring no little against the solid workmanship of Neale Cooper's Ross County. Time and again the opportunities to score after set-pieces went begging, corners and free-kicks fizzling out in the box.
Ross County were pressing on though. And for the first 30 minutes it was the cavalry charges of new boy Marvyn Andrews that rescued Livingston from a number of potentially sticky situations, his pace and out-stretched foot repeatedly quashing the efforts of County's Derek Holmes.
Slowly, Livingston were restoring some sheen to their game. In 39 minutes, Steve Tosh picked up the ball from 25 yards out and was bearing down on County's goal when he was intercepted just outside the box. Scrambling to his feet, Tosh beat Walker to the ball and tapped it forward so that Marino Keith could prod it over the line.
The first half finished with Livingston at last showing some confidence--Andrews leaping to deliver headers with booming regularity. But eight minute after the restart Ross County took them by surprise. A skewed clearance on the part of Livingston's John Anderson allowed Alex Bone to chip the ball beautifully over Neil Alexander to equalise.
Livingston didn't let it get them down. Two minutes later Keith was on hand again, heading in a David Bingham cross to put them back on top. Then, in the 71st minutes, Barry Wilson's corner was met by Anderson, who headed the ball towards the target, its flight halted on the goal-line by the illegal palm of Eddie Cunnington. The defender was off, and Bingham rolled the ball in from the spot.
